As our careers begin, we are tested, not by controlled scenarios, additional smokehouse drills, or simulated firearm training, but by real-life situations that demand everything we have.

As first responders, the word rescue carries immense weight. It is more than an action; it is the moment that tests us, the moment that reveals exactly what our careers, our training, and our sacrifices have prepared us for.

This abuse of 9-1-1 is real. Day after day, first responders are pushed to their limits by unnecessary or misinformed requests for medical, fire, or police assistance. It’s difficult to understand how the system reached this point, but somewhere along the way, the meaning of “emergency” was lost.

“This shift has been brutal, go home and get some rest.” We’ve all heard it. But what happens when rest doesn’t come?

For first responders, searching is second nature. When the call comes — “Structure fire with persons trapped!” or “Amber Alert — a child missing!” — we instantly move. We steady ourselves, focus, and go to work with one mission: search hard for the lost. These are the calls we train for, the ones that define our purpose.
