The Way

Imagine being a firefighter trapped during a primary search inside a structure. Visibility is zero, the heat is intensifying, and there is no clear path to safety. Every second matters.

Then, suddenly, you find a door. Not just any door, the door that leads to a clear escape, to safety, to life.

In that moment, you don’t hesitate. You don’t stop to search for another option or question if there might be a better way. The path is clear, and you commit to it without hesitation because it offers true refuge.

When you first arrived on scene, you may have believed there were multiple ways to attack the fire, save the structure, and return home safely. But as conditions rapidly deteriorated and the threat of flashover became imminent, by grace it became clear, there was only one way out. And when that way was revealed, you took it.

For police officers, imagine responding to what appears to be a routine call. You enter a building, and suddenly you are overwhelmed by gunfire. Chaos erupts in an instant.

In the midst of that chaos, you spot a concrete barrier, something solid, something that will stop the bullets and give you the protection you need to reposition, get off the X, and effectively reengage the threat.

In that moment, you don’t hesitate or remain where you are. You move immediately toward that barrier. You seek refuge behind it because it is the clear and obvious source of safety, the way out of immediate danger.

One clear way makes all the difference, it determines the fate of those who are in harm’s way. Seeing a clear way out and not taking it can be detrimental to all involved. But in almost every situation when our lives are in danger, when the obvious move to safety presents itself, we don’t look for another way, we take the clear way to safety.

The truth of Christianity is this: there is only one way to God. Not many ways, but one. God has provided a single path for us to be rescued from sin. One truth that leads to a new, born-again life. That truth is found in Jesus Christ alone.

He is the only secure exit from eternal damnation, He is the only way to be saved. "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”(Acts 4:12)

When truth is revealed, when God Himself makes known who He is and what He has accomplished through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the response is not indifference. It is not, “No thanks, I’ll return to what I was doing.” Rather, when God reveals Himself to a person, the response is transformation and faith. Confronted with understanding of life changing truth, we are compelled to respond in the affirmative, recognizing that Jesus Christ is the only way.

Consider the firefighter standing in the room moments away from flashing over. When a path to safety is revealed, he doesn’t hesitate or turn away, he runs toward it. When gunfire impedes on an officer and a place of absolute safety is revealed to him, he does not ignore it, he moves toward it with urgency.

In the same way, when the truth of Christ is revealed to us as sinners from God, it changes us, and the only response is to run to Him. The source of everlasting life comes from one place, God alone.

When God rescues us and renews our hearts and minds, we begin to see sin for what it truly is, and we come to know God for who He truly is. In that moment, we are regenerated, the old self dies, and new life is raised within us.

The uncertainty of a once lost and lonely sinner is replaced with a hope and truth that become unmistakably clear: “This is the true way.”

People often say, “There’s no way God would compel me to do anything against my will—certainly not something like forcing me to love and follow Him.”

Many insist that they must be the ones to choose God, that the way of salvation can be presented to them repeatedly. Yet, they are free to ignore it until they decide they are ready to be saved and follow Jesus.

This reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the resurrecting power of the Holy Spirit, a form of prideful ignorance. We need to understand that just as in the case of the firefighter or police officer, when it is made clear to an individual that their current situation will lead to certain death and the way to safety is revealed, remaining where they are is no longer a viable option. If ignoring that path remains an option, then the true way to salvation has not truly been revealed to them; they remain lost, unable to see the way out.

God declares that His salvation is a gift received by faith (John 3:16). This gift is delivered through the message of the Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. And when that message reaches a person whom God intends to save, He does more than inform the mind, He transforms the heart (2 Corinthians 5:17-18).

The Holy Spirit takes the gospel gift of what is heard and presses it deep within a person’s heart. In that moment, He puts to death the old self and replaces a heart of stone with a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26–27). Through this work of regeneration, He brings the old life to an end and reveals who He truly is. When this happens, the only response from the new heart is a deep desire for God, a cry of, “Yes, Lord, I believe, You are the only way.”

How are we revealed the way to Jesus?

• By hearing the Gospel of Jesus. 

  • For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:13-17)

• By Goodness and Loving Kindness from God.

  • For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. (Titus 3:3-8)

• By Grace.

  • For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10)
